Hideo Kojima may have a vision for Death Stranding 3, but fans shouldn't expect him to be in the director’s chair. The legendary game designer has confirmed he has a concept ready, yet he doesn't plan to develop it himself—fueling speculation that retirement might be drawing near.

Kojima Has a Concept—But Not the Time

In a recent interview with VGC, Kojima revealed he’s already mapped out the next potential chapter of the Death Stranding saga, built around a mechanic introduced in the upcoming Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. The concept, called Plate Gate, introduces intercontinental travel and opens up infinite narrative possibilities.

Kojima stated:

“If I use this Plate Gate concept, I could make endless sequels. Of course, I have no plans to do that, though I do have a concept for another sequel. I wouldn’t make it myself, but if I passed it on to someone else, they could probably do it.”

So, Why Step Away from Death Stranding?

Kojima didn’t give a direct reason for stepping back, but context offers clues. At 61 years old, the creator is juggling multiple projects: OD, a boundary-pushing horror title for Xbox, and Physint, a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid for PlayStation.

Kojima Productions isn’t a mega-corporation, and its careful, cinematic development approach means long cycles between releases.
