Grand Theft Auto VI Leak Triggers Market Fallout for Take-Two Interactive
Shares in the Rockstar parent company tumbled due to the leak of unauthorized GTA VI gameplay footage.

The latest leak surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI has thrust the game into turmoil, with never-before-seen footage surfacing across multiple platforms. The breach appears to be extensive, and it seems that additional material may emerge in the coming hours or days, revealing further details about the open-world blockbuster. Already, this incident appears to have had serious consequences.
In the last few hours, Take-Two Interactive, the company behind Rockstar Games, saw its stock price decline sharply. Although the precise cause remains unconfirmed, it seems the leaked videos are the cause, given that the unauthorized content has eroded some of the intrigue surrounding the next instalment in the franchise.
Take-Two Interactive Shares Take Hit Following GTA VI Leaks
First, the context. Earlier this week an unidentified group of hackers released several clips purporting to show genuine GTA VI gameplay. It seems the footage is authentic given that Take-Two started issuing copyright takedown notices and removing the material from online platforms.
The episode escalated over subsequent days, as additional scenes and previously unseen details continued to surface. It has become a serious issue, as it marks the first time that a Rockstar title so close to being released has been publicly exposed in motion.
As might be expected, the fallout has had significant repercussions for the franchise’s owners. According to reports, the leak coincided with Take-Two losing millions of dollars in shares.
Prior to the leak, shares were trading at approximately $248.13 USD; following the incident, they dropped to $236.50 USD, a decline of nearly $12 per share.
The downward trajectory persisted throughout the week, with the price dipping as low as $232.68 USD at one point. That cumulative decrease of $15.29 per share, as noted by Insider-Gaming, translates to a roughly $2.83 billion reduction in the company’s market capitalization.
While stock movements are inherently volatile and subject to multiple influences, it’s easy to link these drops with the leaks. Further fluctuations are possible in the days ahead.
Let’s recall that Take-Two is scheduled to host an extended preview of the game on August 27, accessible exclusively through a Netflix membership. Critics argue that the recent disclosures have diminished the element of surprise, potentially undermining the promotional value of that planned reveal.

GTA VI Leakers Are Trying to Get Money, Not Defend Players
The leak has ignited fierce debate across social media. While a segment of the gaming community is excited about the early glimpse of Rockstar’s latest work, others have condemned the perpetrators for spoiling the experience and for the collateral damage inflicted on the development team.
The group claiming responsibility for the breach issued a manifesto criticizing monetization practices in major gaming studios, accompanied by three commandments warning of further actions against companies that fail to adhere to their demands.
Rather than championing consumer protection, however, the leakers appear to be leveraging the controversy to promote a so-called “memecoin”, i.e., a cryptocurrency venture.
This opportunistic angle has drawn sharp rebuke from the Stop Killing Games movement, which advocates for legitimate consumer rights and the preservation of playable titles after official support ends, and which has distanced itself from the hackers’ tactics.
Prominent streamer xQc also weighed in, criticizing those who actively sought out the leaked footage and calling them not real gamers.
