Rockstar Games Breaks Silence on Infamous 2022 GTA VI Leak: “It’s Really Weirdly Invasive”
By Ulises Contreras onAaron Garbut reveals the severe emotional toll the incident took on the development team behind Grand Theft Auto VI.

The agonizing wait is nearly over: Grand Theft Auto VI, arguably the most anticipated video game of the decade, is set to launch next month. Yet, the road to release has been anything but smooth. The project has endured its share of controversies and none larger than the catastrophic 2022 security breach, which exposed early gameplay footage over a year before its official reveal and cost the studio millions.
4 years later, the consequences of that breach are still visible in Rockstar Games’ day-to-day operations and security protocols. Now, a key creative lead on the project is speaking about how the studio navigated the crisis that paralyzed the gaming industry in 2022.

Rockstar Games Addresses Grand Theft Auto VI’s Infamous Leak
In 2022, the industry was blindsided when a cyberattack compromised Rockstar’s internal servers. The stolen assets were leaked online, offering the public its very first glimpse of the game’s dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia.
Rockstar quickly confirmed the authenticity of the material while stressing that it represented an early, unfinished build. Despite the rough state of the footage, it served as the world’s initial preview of what is now Grand Theft Auto VI.
For the developers, artists, and engineers pouring years of work into the title, the breach was devastating. Speaking in a recent interview with Bloomberg, Aaron Garbut, one of three main development heads on GTA VI, broke his silence on the incident.
Garbut explained that the most painful aspect was watching early, internal-only work broadcast across social media that were never intended for public consumption.
“It feels like somebody’s wading through your dirty washing. It’s like they’re inside your head. You see your early work out there. Nobody’s ever supposed to see that. It’s really weirdly invasive. It was quite hard to deal with on an emotional level,” he said.
The leak reshaped Rockstar’s organizational culture. In the aftermath, the studio began rolling back its flexible work-from-home policies, culminating in a mandatory five-day, in-office mandate phased in throughout 2024.

GTA VI, the Most Anticipated Game of the Decade, Was Leaked Again in 2026
Rockstar leadership publicly cited security risks as the core driver behind ending remote work. However, whether developers will regain work-from-home flexibility after GTA VI launches remains uncertain.
Speaking on the matter, Rockstar director Jennifer Kolbe expressed doubt about returning to a hybrid workplace model anytime soon.
“The idea that we would have the game in that many environments is something that I think the security team would not love,” she said. “I think if we did not have a game that people wanted to steal as much, maybe it would be an easier conversation.”
Sadly, security challenges resurfaced in August 2026 when a leaker operating under the handle Cyberleek published actual gameplay footage online.
The leaker publicly criticized Rockstar over rumors surrounding the absence of a physical disc release, briefly positioning themselves as a consumer advocate while simultaneously monetizing the leak through cryptocurrency transactions.
Cyberleek has since announced a halt to further leaks, claiming that while they possess access to the full title, they will hold back unless provoked, threatening to release major story spoilers if targeted.
