Seems like PlayStation is partnering with the Swedish firm Tobii Tech AB to take the upcoming PS VR2 a step further in the immersive field.
According to Tobii, their tech will be featured in the new PlayStation 5 VR headset.
“PlayStation VR2 establishes a new baseline for immersive virtual reality (VR) entertainment and will enable millions of users across the world to experience the power of eye tracking,” said Anand Srivatsa, Tobii CEO, in a statement.
Ok, but what does this even mean?
If you are not familiar with Tobii they are the “global leader” in eye tracking and pioneer of attention computing.
So, this partnership will give us new levels of immersion by harnessing the natural movement of your eyes. How? Easy! With cameras that use a custom infrared optical sensor to track users’ eye movements.
So far this type of technology is supported in over 50 games including Far Cry 6, Assassins Creed Valhalla and Flight Simulator; there you can use eye movement for functions such as aiming and selecting items, with visuals even able to come in and out of focus based on where the player is looking.
“This allows players to interact more intuitively in new and lifelike ways, allowing for a heightened emotional response and enhanced expression that provide a new level of realism in gaming.”
Amazing, isn’t it? Let’s not forget that Sony confirmed over 20 games ready for its launch, so, we are excited to see which ones implemented this feature.
