According to reports on the LinkedIn profile of Xbox Game Pass's Senior Content Planner, Microsoft has a budget of up to $100 million available to strike deals with third-party publishers for the arrival of games on the service.
What could possibly be this expensive?
Specifically, the LinkedIn profile holder addressed the arrival of games such as GTA V, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, and the collaboration with EA Play. Additionally, we found out that the Redmond-based company's goal is to publish at least 15 games per month on Xbox Game Pass; also, it is reported that the company has a budget of up to $100 million available for adding games to the catalog.
Microsoft is willing to make deals of all kinds, from less than $1 million to $100 million (and apparently, beyond), depending on the prestige of individual titles and various commercial factors that raise the desirability of individual productions. Indeed, a AAA game on day one will cost more than an independent production available months after launch, it is not entirely clear what the decision-making parameters are, but in any case, it is clear how the figures involved are very palatable.
In case you missed it: Is the Ninja Gaiden reboot in the hands of PlatinumGames?
For example, adding on Game Pass Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy cost Microsoft about $5 to $10 million, and we are still talking about a flagship title, so it is likely that the $100 million ceiling is only considered in rare cases and for massive productions or services such as EA Play and Ubisoft Plus.
