According to comedian Tomohide Ohkawa, his friend Akira Toriyama started having health problems since 2022, the year he was hospitalized during the pandemic. However, the bad news came in April 2023, when Ohkawa received a mail from the mangaka.

In it he notified that he was likely to be hospitalized due to a brain tumor. Ohkawa had heard that he was going to undergo surgery in February this year; however, he did not disclose further details. He only stated that Toriyama's health was generally good.

Takao Koyama, anime scriptwriter, also made similar statements in recent days. He stated that Toriyama had been ill since last year, possibly due to a brain tumor.

"Subdural hematoma. I wonder if you hit your head? It seems you’ve been suffering from illness since last year. That’s unfortunate. It must have been quite difficult for you. I was also hospitalized for 100 days last year, so I can empathize with you," Koyama said.

While the information comes from people close to Toriyama, it is important to mention that his family has been very discreet on the subject and preferred not to delve into the causes of his passing.
