Not only did Microsoft Flight Simulator entail the rebirth of one of the most iconic simulator series ever in gaming, but it also marked a new milestone in terms of graphics and visual fidelity on PC and Xbox consoles.
So impressive is Microsoft Flight Simulator's graphical compartment that Xbox division leader Phil Spencer himself had an incredulous reaction the first time he got a glimpse of the project created in collaboration with Asobo Studio (the same authors of A Plague Tale Requiem).
Xbox's CEO couldn't believe what he was seeing
"When I first introduced it, the first demo I showed Phil [Spencer] was Seattle in 3D. I flew over Microsoft Campus-literally the building we were talking in-and he said, 'Why are you showing me a video of Seattle?" That's when I knew we had made it," said Microsoft's Jorg Neumann. "So I told him, 'It's in real-time,' and he said, 'There's no f***ing way' [laughs]. We knew we had something on our hands."
More than the flight simulation, Neumann believes Flight Simulator's success can be traced back to its being an "Earth Simulator": "When we launched it, we found people who liked or had some respect for airplanes, but they really liked the planet. That's the killer app. That's what attracted new people."
In case you missed it: Bethesda's most anticipated new game, Starfield, could have been released by now.
''From gliders and helicopters to wide-body jets, fly highly detailed and accurate aircraft in the Microsoft Flight Simulator 40th Anniversary Edition. The world is at your fingertips,'' the game's official description reads.
