Shigeru Miyamoto, the renowned creative behind Nintendo, has put an end to a debate that has been ongoing for years by stating in a recent interview that he does not hate shooters and is not against violent video games. This is due to comments he made several years ago that have haunted him ever since.
In a conversation with Variety (via Nintendo Everything), Miyamoto was asked about the topic as the general opinion was that he opposed these types of games and preferred other experiences that over time have become Nintendo's hallmark.
Miyamoto Does Not Hate Shooters or Violent Games
At the end of 2020, Miyamoto launched a scathing critique of the industry, attacking the massive development of shooters. From his perspective, these games have simple mechanics that are created solely to sell well.
Several years ago, in 2012, the creative also expressed concern about violence in games and titles based on weapons. He also noted that Nintendo remained committed to younger generations of players.
Now, Miyamoto clarified that he does not actually hate shooters or is against violent games. He stated that they are a valid form of entertainment for many, but that he prefers to look in another direction for the creation of his games and everything related to Mario.
"I want to make it clear that I am not against shooters and violent games. There are many mediums that entertain people, but I believe that my mission is to find other ways to make a game interesting and fun. I told myself that Mario is a character that never hurts other people, so I wanted to find a different way to express Mario," said the creative.
