As we've said countless times, making video games is an extremely complicated process. At the end of the day, there are many factors that come into play and too many elements to consider. Unfortunately, it seems that development processes will become increasingly lengthy.

A few days ago, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, stated that the era where big studios could make and release three or more high-profile games in a decade is now over. He even expects that high-budget titles could take up to six years to develop.

While new technologies and tools are helpful in development processes, projects are becoming larger and more ambitious, while player expectations are increasing. This means that developer studios have to work longer on their games.

Cory Barlog says game development cycles will become longer

Now, Cory Barlog, director of God of War (2018) and creative at SIE Santa Monica Studio, has reacted to Matt Booty's comments, stating that this future is a reality. In a Twitter post, he commented that development periods have been long for some time, and reaffirmed that it is exhausting to work on a title for many years.

The director also comments that game development will take longer and longer due to hardware advances. And yes, he believes that he would not be able to endure a 10-year development process.

"Yes, he's very right. It's been like this for a while. It's exhausting to work on one thing for so long, and it's worse for games that have been in development for more than eight years. A 10-year project would probably kill me. Unfortunately, [development cycles] will get longer as generations of hardware advance," Cory Barlog assured on Twitter.

It's unknown what Cory Barlog has in store, but a recent clue suggests he may be involved in a new science fiction game developed by SIE Santa Monica Studio.
