In certain cases, video games can sharpen skills that prove valuable in everyday life and at work. One career in particular stands to benefit from such gaming experience, and the United States has capitalized on this by launching a major recruitment drive aimed at transforming young gamers into the next generation of air traffic controllers.

This is not the first time the U.S. has turned to video games for propaganda purposes. Earlier this year, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation unveiled a novel initiative to recruit gamers specifically for air traffic control roles. The program generated an unprecedented wave of interest, drawing more than 8,000 applications from aspiring candidates.

Months after the initiative first launched, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed over the weekend that the program had delivered historic results.

According to official figures, it filled 94% of its recruitment target in record time, with over 2,000 gamers brought on board, marking the highest number of hires in a single year to date.

Secretary Duffy described the new recruits as “the best and brightest” among the applicant pool, adding that they would enter the academy faster than any previous generation, thanks to a streamlined hiring process.

However, securing a spot in the program is only the first step. While the selected candidates have met the baseline requirements including fluent English, U.S. citizenship, and an age under 31 at the time of application, they are not yet qualified air traffic controllers. They must first complete an intensive academy course and obtain full certification

Passing the initial screening does not ensure success as it simply secures government sponsorship for academy tuition. It is worth noting that air traffic control is consistently ranked among the most stressful occupations worldwide, and the path to certification remains notoriously difficult. Around one-third of trainees fail to earn their credentials even after entering the academy.

Still, the program stands out as a remarkable example of how an unconventional recruitment strategy can open doors for gamers. The role demands a set of skills obtained through hours of gameplay and offers a potential annual salary of up to $155,000, a figure prominently featured in the campaign’s promotional video.

“I’ve been a gamer for most of my life,” one successful applicant shared. “I took the test, and now I can’t wait to become an air traffic controller. It’s exactly what I want to do for the rest of my life.”
