Grand Theft Auto is not only one of the biggest and most successful franchises in the gaming industry, but also in the entertainment industry as a whole. Its latest game, GTA V, debuted in 2013 and continues to maintain strong sales. It's not surprising that it has achieved a new record almost 10 years after its original release.

Take-Two published its most recent earnings report, covering the last quarter ending on March 31, 2023. In the report, updated sales figures for some of their video games were revealed, and the company discussed the overall state of the company in financial terms.

GRAND THEFT AUTO V IS UNSTOPPABLE AND HAS ALREADY SOLD MILLIONS OF COPIES

In the report, the company announced that the Grand Theft Auto franchise has sold over 400 million units since the release of its first installment, representing an approximate increase of 5 million units compared to the previous quarter. On the other hand, Grand Theft Auto V has already shipped over 180 million copies since its original debut in 2013.

If we do a simple rule of three, we can conclude that the title starring Michael de Santa, Trevor Phillips, and Franklin Clinton represents approximately 45% of the total sales of the Rockstar Games franchise. Due to the exact unit sales figures being a mystery, the actual percentage could be different.

Nevertheless, it's impressive that GTA V continues to maintain a strong commercial pace despite being on the market for nearly a decade. Take-Two mentions in their earnings report that, based on unit and dollar sales, it is "the best-selling game of the past 10 years in the United States".

While it remains in the shadow of Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, it is also a success in every sense. According to the latest report, it has already sold over 53 million units worldwide since its release. Take-Two also provided data on the sales of NBA 2K (135 million units), Borderlands (80 million copies), and Sid Meier's Civilization (67 million).

But tell us, why do you think the open-world franchise is so popular? Do you believe that the next installment will replicate the success of its predecessor? Let us know in the comments.
