Naoki Yoshida, producer of Final Fantasy XVI, spoke some time ago about the lack of diversity in the game. This was due to complaints from some players about a supposed lack of representation and ethnic diversity in the title's characters.
Part of the community is not happy with the creative's response, so they are now planning a boycott of Final Fantasy XVI. Due to the lack of representation, several players stated that they will not purchase the RPG to send a clear message to Square Enix.
New controversy arises over Final Fantasy XVI and its diversity
If you don't remember, Yoshida said that the lack of diversity is due to the game taking place in medieval Europe, so it's not possible for everything related to its world and characters to be as diverse as in a modern context.
Some players have said that they will boycott Final Fantasy XVI because they are unhappy with the creative's response. They stated that they maintain their position, believing that the game lacks "diversity and minority characters".
On the other hand, they asserted that everyone who disagrees with Square Enix's stance should vote with their wallets and not purchase the game at launch.
"Despite numerous criticisms and reactions about the lack of diversity in the game, and Square's always questionable response to the issue, it seems like a lot of people are still thinking of buying Final Fantasy XVI. This strikes me as... a bit strange, because it would seem that the best way to send a message to Square would be to 'vote with your wallet,' so to speak, and not buy the game given these concerns," said one player.
Others stated that representation is very important in video games but they don't take it as a parameter for selecting games to buy. This is because, from their point of view, representation has always been poor in the industry, so they prefer to focus on factors such as the fun offered by the games to make a decision.
"If I boycotted games for the lack of diversity in characters that looked like me, I wouldn't have anything to play other than some indie games, to put it bluntly," added another player.
Finally, there are players determined not to give Final Fantasy XVI a chance, so they will focus on other major releases that are already on the way.
"I won't buy it. To be completely honest, knowing that Starfield and Dragon's Dogma II will come with black characters and a character creation system that includes black characters makes it really easy to skip Final Fantasy XVI," added another person.
Final Fantasy XVI will debut on June 22nd for PlayStation 5.
